And when it comes to the general public, especially non-fans, 'Oops!' also comes before 'BOMT'.
I'd dare saying 10 years from now even the "music experts" will be going for 'Toxic' first, unless the fact that it didn't hit #1 on the Hot 100 keeps pushing it aside, while 'BOMT' was her 1st and biggest US hit.

I completely agree with you.
Toxic is the better song, but since BOMT is Britney's first single, and it was indeed successful, it will always be Britney's most remembered single. Plus, I think what sort of discredits Toxic's credibility is that Britney's music for the recent years has been similar to it; edgy, dance, clubb-ish, meanwhile Baby One More Time has a hitting bubblegum sound to it that Britney was best known for and that she hasn't done ever since, and probably won't do it again, which makes
that Britney more special and identifiable than the Toxic Britney. Other than that, I agree with everything you said.
