Britney Spears returns to the music scene with the first single from her as-of-yet untitled seventh studio album, which is due out in March.
In 'Hold it Against Me', Britney leaves behind the bubblegum pop sound from her last album to deliver a song that feels like the evolution of her critically acclaimed Blackout. For the first time in years we can actually hear her voice as the use of autotune in the production is minimal compared to her most recent work.
The track, produced by Dr Luke, starts with a heart-throbbing bass synth that cleverly fades out as soon as the chorus kicks in, providing moments of pure pop at its finest. The song keeps building momentum until reaching its peak in a dubstep-inspired breakdown, marking the first appearance of this genre on a mainstream single of this magnitude. After the breakdown, where Ms Spears delivers her moans, groans, whispered words and classic signature sounds in a very good attempt to get everyone up and dancing, the production finally comes together for the last dance.
The only things missing are stronger vocals and a subtle change of the melody with the lyrics to give you that final shock of electricity. Having said that, while lyrics like "Cause you feel like paradise and I need a vacation tonight" won't win any awards, they are more than what club songs generally have to offer.
'Hold it Against Me', which will be released on February 20th in the UK, is arguably Britney's best single since her Blackout days, and surely destined to be her most successful since 2007.
Welcome back, Brit. 4/5
