I've never really cared for religion, and I don't plan to. But yes, a lot of Americans are uninformed on other religions.
Personally, religion just brainwashes you, so I don't even follow it. Especially when that religion makes you hate races, sexual orientation, and other religions.
Besides, my personality would not fit with religion, so why should I even care about it?
I hope none of you are offended because I'm not generalizing Americans, I was just wondering how tolerant they would be of other religions. For example, if my Hindu father were to do his morning puja (prayers) in the backyard or on the lawn, would he be abused verbally or made fun of?
I'm not going to lie to you, many people would make fun of him, be it an adult or a younger person. Its a damn shame
I think the media has done the most significant damage to religious views in this country. People are starting to forget that level-headed spiritual individuals like myself exist. But when you're watching the news and the likes of the Westboro Baptist Church and other homophobic institutions are causing stirs, it's hard to see the positive effects religion can have. You can find bigots and extremists in any religion, but I wish the more mainstream believers would get some attention..
I've been through my whole spirituality vs. sexuality dilemma, which was a mess, but ultimately a great experience for helping me understand who I am. I realize that when I do come out to my parents they are likely to have an adverse reaction, but I also like to believe that their love for their son overpowers the bad ideas that religion has planted in their heads about my "lifestyle" (hate calling it that). Plus, I think most parents are conscious of their closeted gay children on some level, so there comes a point where they don't try and press the issue. My mom hasn't preached to me about the benefits of finding a Catholic spouse or inquired about my romantic life in a couple years. I think on a subconscious level she gets it, and she just needs me to confirm it when the time is right.

It depends on the setting. If he did that in Jacksonville, FL, he would get cussed out or worse. If he did it in San Francisco, he would get other people trying to copy him.
