"Can't Be Tamed" and "Not Myself Tonight" were released two-three weeks after the premier, and we all know what happened.

Rihanna / Katy vs Miley / Christina?

Add on both of those songs were especially tacky.

But yeah, "California Gurls" debuted at #2 on the Hot 100 with 294,000 sold it's first week at beginning of, and didn't get #1 until mid-June, so it didn't 'shoot' to #1.
I guess this could still hit #1 if it's radio updates keep it up, though "Gurls" had Pop/Rhythmic/Hot AC support. It also was selling upwards of 300k-350k a week when it was #1, which obviously helped it to #1 a bit more than radio.
With history Rihanna isn't
that big of a digital-seller. Def Jam should've just went with the Britney set-up, a couple weeks at radio, then huge week sales and straight to #1. This could work if Rihanna were performing at the VMAs.
