confuse huge commercial success with artistic accomplishments- doesn't work that way. Some of the mot revered acts have enjoyed a lot of commercial success- but one's level of commercial success does not make them one of the greatest. Many of the big-voiced "divas" recorded run-of-the-mill, safe, formulaic music, especially in regards to the ballads. I enjoy music by the big-voiced "divas," but it's understandable why they're not held in the same regard as the acts who constantly garner acclaim and critical success.

Britney Spears has a couple of acclaimed singles, but her albums have not enjoyed high levels of critical success. And lip-synching all of her last tour certainly doesn't help- fans knew going into it that that was the case, which is fine- but it's not going to help garner respect.

RE Michael Jackson- he certainly had critical respect before his passing. His passing probably enhanced it, but he was not lacking for acclaim and critical success before his passing. Off the Wall and Thriller enjoyed lots of acclaim.

Then what explains Beyonce being in the 40s, ahead of freaking R.E.M of all people.

Janet was treated badly enough since 2004. It was her own fault, but I don't think it warranted all that hate, especially when Justin was apart of that scheme, yet he was left untouched. Race played a big part with that, and that's all I will say...
