I love Mariah so much. But she is not a legend. Janet seems beyond pop culture now, she is so respected in the black community and she doesn't even have to try with her music anymore. There is a bizarre juxtaposition between her social standing and her commercial success, but I know her legend status is secure. She could flop forever and it wouldn't matter. Janet changed pop music, she moved it just a bit. Mariah never did.

That's not true. Janet became overtly sexual. She was a media darling in the '90s, yes, very much like Beyonce is now. But she was never as transparent as Mariah, she has always been more mysterious and she seems at once more down-to-earth and more famous. And her freak stuff really sealed the deal, the girl is more sexual than any other female pop star. And I love her for that. Mariah, like Beyonce, is safe.
