Pedro's Glorious 2016: The Glorious Singles (Part II)
The Gloriest Best Of 2016 is now among us.
Welcome.
We are getting there and I am aware last night's update was massive but we have got to get this going and finished in two days. Just like Britney Spears would say "you better work bxtch!" and I am! Today the update will not be that short but won't be that long either. I will be presenting you with 30 more singles that ruled my year and hopefully we will be able to finish by 4th of January!
40. P!NK - "Just Like Fire"
|
It took me a little bit of time to get used to this song because it sounds a bit like everything P!nk has been releasing for the past few years. This Pop Rock formula is her comfort zone and I feel like she is not willing to let go. "Just Give Me a Reason" was P!nk's only recent single that actually brought something new to the table and I wish she'd do more things like that or just go back to her iconic R&B anthems. Nonetheless I do admit that "Just Like Fire" is great but I needed to focus on this lack of improvement from her.
Just like fire, burning out the way. If I can light the world up for just one day
1st and only appearance from P!NK |
39. Calvin Harris - "This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna)"
|
This song isn't all that and I will never understand how it became so huge... I really trust my theory that people missed this Pop Rihanna. "This Is What You Came For" was an instant hit... It took off the moment it was released and, maybe because of that, it also became a bit old quickly. Yet I still can jam to it and have a good time listening to it even though it doesn't have that magic feeling that it once had - something to blame the radios for, I'd say!
We go fast till they can't replay. Who knows why it's gotta be this way
2nd and last appearance from Calvin Harris
3rd of 4 appearances from Rihanna |
38. RedOne - "Don't You Need Somebody (feat. Enrique Iglesias, R. City, Serayah and Shaggy)"
|
Words can't explain the feeling I first got when I heard this song for the first time. It got a bit old now but I love how cheerful it is, how friendly it is and how it doesn't try hard to be an anthem. I like its simplicity and its summerish production. On top of that, I have been dying for a song like this from Enrique Iglesias - his last was "Can You Hear Me" which I made sure to replay nonstop. This song has this amazing replay value and it just sounds phenomenal on the radio.
To keep you up all night baby I'm at your, I'm at your door
1st and only appearance from RedOne
1st and only appearance from Enrique Iglesias
1st and only appearance from R. City
1st and only appearance from Serayah
1st and only appearance from Shaggy |
37. Shakira - "Try Everything"
|
It took me SO long to get used to this song and y'all know I am a HUGE Shakira fan. The thing is I don't think Shakira and Sia are a good match. I had the proof with "Chasing Shadows" and got it even more with "Try Everything". After watching Zootopia, I kind of fell in love with the song for its sweetness and because Gazelle slayed me. Yet, I think Shakira should just turn off every Sia song that could possibly appear in the future - can't believe she turned down "Move Your Body" though.
I'll keep on making those new mistakes. I'll keep on making them every day
1st of 3 appearances of Shakira |
36. Rihanna - "Needed Me"
|
Would have never thought this would end up being my favorite single of Rihanna with her "ANTI" album but yes! Yes, it is! I really like the mysterious and underground sound it portrays and how it kind of brings back a more organic Rihanna. She has been doing this type of "G4L" songs for a while and it kind of reminded me her old material which I love more than "ANTI". On top of that, this is the meaning of a sleeper hit! Never really smashed but slayed Billboard!
You was just another ***** on the hit list, tryin' fix your inner issues with a bad bitch
4th and last appearance of Rihanna |
35. Clean Bandit - "Rockabye (feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie)"
|
I kind of was tortured with this song when I went to the United Kingdom in November. It was all over and my friend was just too obsessed. The thing I like the most is how this is a dance song but keeps a very mature and interesting lyrics. Anne-Marie's accent is also quite good and sensual. It is not everyday that you have a dance song slaying with meaningful lyrics, right? Clean Bandit are so interesting! I should get into them.
She tells him, "Ooh, love, no one's ever gonna hurt you, love. I'm gonna give you all of my love, nobody matters like you"
1st and only appearance of Clean Bandit
1st and only appearance of Anne-Marie
1st and only appearance of Sean Paul |
34. Selena Gomez - "Kill 'Em With Kindness"
|
Just like a lot of the songs in this list, I didn't love "Kill 'Em With Kindness" at first. I was pressed it became a single and not "Sober" (or any other worthy song) but with time I learned how to appreciate it and I love how smooth and soft it is. It works so well on the radio and I love its lyrics. It is a bit hard to find a song that doesn't talk about love, sex or partying and "Kill 'Em With Kindness" is just pure and organic. I love it so much as for today.
Everyday a small piece of you dies. Always somebody you’re willing to fight
1st of 2 appearances of Selena Gomez |
33. Jennifer Lopez - "Ain't Your Mama"
|
Freaking slay! I love "Ain't Your Mama" so much! This song was my jam and I still jam so hard to it. I love how empowering it is, the hard beat, how modern it sounds and how unique it was during 2016 - there wasn't a lot of songs like this one. On top of all that, I love JLo's vocals and its lyrics, they are so specific. It's funny though because I am sure if Meghan sung this I wouldn't love it as much, Jennifer adds this special touch to it and I think that's why it smashed.
When you're gon' get your act together? I ain't your mama!
1st and only appearance of Jennifer Lopez |
32. Sia - "The Greatest (feat. Kendrick Lamar)"
|
Sia was one of the main female artists of 2016 and I am so glad she released something like "The Greatest" after "Cheap Thrills". Even though - as you will see - the later will be higher on this list, "The Greatest" brings something completely different and maybe more interesting. I love the lyrics of the song and how it goes through different moods in a matter of seconds. Again, I usually tend to dislike this overplayed radio tracks but this is a huge exception for its quality.
I'm free to be the greatest, I'm alive
1st of 2 appearances of Sia
2nd of 3 appearances of Kendrick Lamar |
31. Gwen Stefani - "Misery"
|
It annoys the hell out of me how Gwen Stefani was so ignored with such masterpieces. "Misery" has that hit factor attached to it: it is different, radio-friendly, catchy... I really wish I could put some sense in people's mind sometimes. "Misery" is one of my favorite tracks of her album and my favorite single taken from the album. I really like how original and different the track is. It ain't pure pop. It has some tropical and urban influences. It is just too good!
You're like drugs, you're like drugs to me... I'm so into you totally
2nd and last appearance of Gwen Stefani |
30. Ellie Goulding - "Something In The Way You Move"
|
I don't know what to say or how to explain this choice but this song transcends me. I love how Pop it is and maybe that's why it underperformed yet I can have it on replay for ages. The pre-chorus is magical and the chorus stucks like glue into my head. I love how cheerful it is but also how peaceful it sounds. I am not a big fan of Ellie, to be honest, but her voice works like magic in this song and I've been hooked on it ever since I first saw the music video and was introduced to it.
But tonight I'm gonna lose it all. Playing with fire, I was the first to fall
1st and only appearance of Ellie Goulding |
29. JoJo - "F* Apologies (feat. Wiz Khalifa)"
|
I took so long to actually listen to this song and then when I did, I thought: "Why? Why did I took so long to hear this masterpiece?" "**** Apologies" is so current and it has everything to smash but well... JoJo needs to restart her career from scratch and that is not easy, especially given the state of the industry. I love how the chorus kicks in so hard and makes you groove and how the lyrics are like... So real!
And honestly I was just about to pick up the phone and then I realized that I didn't do nothing wrong
1st and only appearance of JoJo
1st and only appearance of Wiz Khalifa |
28. Meghan Trainor - "Better (feat. Yo Gotti)"
|
I really have a thing when Pop and Reggae mix into a single music style. It brings this tropical vibe to the song that I just can't resist. "Better" is so relaxing and empowering and its music style just makes it all better because it really makes you shake it off and understand that you really "deserve better". On top of this, Meghan's vocals are so smooth and different from her usual material. This is a big yes!
Tell 'em what they already know, I deserve better
1st of 2 appearances of Meghan Trainor
1st and only appearance of Yo Gotti |
27. Lady Gaga - "Million Reasons"
|
The first time I heard "Million Reasons", I almost cried. It was during her Carpool Karaoke. The feeling attached to this song is just transcending. Gaga is feeling every part of the lyrics she is singing and that is easy to feel. She let her guard down during this "Joanne" era and really started being herself. Even though I have mad love for this song I have to say that it got old quite fast and I think that's why it ended underperforming. Nonetheless, when I want to make sure I feel depressed, this is my company. This is beautiful.
When I bow down to pray, I try to make the worst seem better
2nd and last appearance of Lady Gaga |
26. Beyoncé - "Freedom"
|
"Freedom" is powerful and no one really stays indifferent to it. I love how Beyoncé's vocals are so clean and so loud. They're the main focus of this song. The way she sings it and the way the song is build really gives you this empowering feeling of freedom. The chorus takes it to another level and you can't help it but join the festivity. I love when empowering songs are actually empowering and not sad and "Freedom" is all about strenght, hope and faith!
I'm telling these tears, "Go and fall away, fall away"
2nd of 6 appearances of Beyoncé
3rd and last appearance of Kendrick Lamar |
25. Coldplay - "Hymn For The Weekend (feat. Beyoncé)"
|
God Damn It! If I only told you how long I've been waiting for Coldplay to release an amazing single... I mean, don't get me wrong! "Princess of China" was cool and so was "Paradise" but quickly overplayed and overrated. I much prefer this type of music from them and I have to admit Beyoncé adds so much to this song. What I like the most is how this is not a dance song but it makes you want to move and makes you so excited. The lyrics are something else. I love how this kind of have this mysterious feeling attached to it.
Then we'll shoot across the sky
1st and only appearance of Coldplay
3rd of 6 appearances of Beyoncé |
24. Adam Lambert - "Welcome To The Show (feat. Laleh)"
|
I know. Out of these 100 songs, this is the most random one and you may be wondering why it is so high but well... I truly love this song. I've always loved Adam Lambert. His voice is so powerful and so on key and his music style quite slays. On top of that, "Welcome To The Show" is better than the entire "The Original High" album. If I am to be honest I really don't know who this Laleh is but who cares. I love how this song goes so hard and how chill it also is at the same time. Adam really nailed this.
So welcome to the show, bring on all the lights let it shine on you
1st and only appearance of Adam Lambert
1st and only appearance of Laleh |
23. Sia - "Cheap Thrills"
|
When I first heard this song, I was OBSESSED. I would overplay it and then it got to a point where radio would do that for me to a point I couldn't take it anymore. Everytime this would start on the radio, I'd change it. After a while, I decided to listen to it again (and let me add NO SEAN PAUL VERSION!) and it kind of slayed me again... Not in the same way but enough to remember me how this song ruled 2016 along with some others and had to be on my list.
Baby I don't need dollar bills to have fun tonight
2nd and last appearance of Sia |
22. Beyoncé - "Sorry"
|
Beyoncé meets Pop! It has been a while ever since she released such a pop track and it feels good to have this version of her back! This song is very laid back and actually pretty smooth taking in consideration some stuff she says and how this is a "boy bye" type of song. What I also love about "Sorry" is how quote-worthy it is! There are so many good lines to quote eventhough they are obviously not brilliant. I like this "all on your face" Beyoncé. I like when she doesn't take her that seriously because she is not all that.
Middle fingers up, put them hands high. Wave it in his face, tell him, boy, bye!
4th of 6 appearances of Beyoncé |
21. Ariana Grande - "Into You"
|
Ariana Grande is the only female singer that can release a pop single and smash. "Into You" wasn't that big, I know, but it ended up having an impact and having a nice chart run! I really respect her when it comes to deliver good pop music and being able to smash so effortlessly. The song is very catchy and its production is flawless. It is a real summer bop! On top of that, it is not that easy for a Pop song to have such long verses and still be catchy!
A little less conversation, and a little more touch my body
2nd of 4 appearances of Ariana Grande |
20. Beyoncé - "Formation"
|
I do love "Formation" but I hate its overhype. The song's production and lyrics are quite flawless and spot on but people just always create this entire hype around Beyoncé that I will never fully comprehend. I love the swag and the attitude this song portrays. There's no way you don't feel like a badass when listening to this song and I just love when songs have this type of vibe and feel to it. On top of that the "I Slay" line kills me! She does slay though.
My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana. You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas bama
5th of 6 appearances of Beyoncé |
19. Machine Gun Kelly - "Bad Things (feat. Camila Cabello)"
|
Judge Camila all you want but she is up for a very bright future and I can imagine 2017 being her year and you'll be sorry to have trashed her or shaded her. I obviously got heartbroken with her leaving Fifth Harmony but "Bad Things" was actually released before that. Camila is "Bad Things"! No one even knows who MGK is. Her voice during the chorus is so good to listen to, her voice is so warm and so passionated. The best thing about this is that her tone is so unique that she already has her own identity so early in her career!
Don't matter what you say, don't matter what you do, I only wanna do bad things to you
1st and only appearance of Machine Gun Kelly
1st and only appearance of Camila Cabello (solo) |
18. Charlie Puth -"We Don't Talk Anymore (feat. Selena Gomez)"
|
I KNOW! This song is a bit cheesy and all that but at the same it makes you feel some sort of way. The lyrics are sad and the rhythm isn't the happiest ever but Charlie's and Selena's pain makes you feel understood and warm... I don't know how to explain it but that's how I feel about it. I simply love this cute romance story and how accurate its lyrics are. I am not Charlie's biggest fan but I have to admit this song is the best I've heard from him so far.
Should've known your love was a game, now I can't get you out of my brain
1st and only appearance of Charlie Puth
2nd and last appearance of Selena Gomez |
17. Demi Lovato - "Body Say"
|
My Goodness. If someone had told me I'd rank a Demi Lovato this song a best of year list, I wouldn't have believed it. "Body Say" is pure sex. This song slays me so hard. Her vocals are so sensual, the rhythm is hot and you feel so good and relaxed while listening to it. The chorus takes me into a brand new dimension and gives this boost of energy to the song. I can't believe she sabotaged this epic song and didn't give it proper single treatment. This would've done good.
Dreamland, take me there 'cause I want your sex. If my body had a say, I wouldn't turn away
2nd and last appearance of Demi Lovato |
16. Ariana Grande - "Side To Side (feat. Nicki Minaj)"
|
I don't even remember this track the first time I heard "Dangerous Woman" and I wasn't too sure on how to feel about this as a single. I just didn't see all that potential and Nicki Minaj isn't that "hot name" anymore but she clearly helped Ariana having the biggest hit of her "Dangerous Woman" era. The song is very sexy, obviously, and the lyrics quite... interesting. Ever since the video though, I kind of ignore that meaning of the song and I see it as a workout song. Extra points for the Nicki feature!
Gun pop and I make my gum pop. I'm the queen of rap, young Ariana run pop
3rd of 4 appearances of Ariana Grande
1st and only appearance of Nicki Minaj |
15. Poli Genova - "If Love Was a Crime"
|
This song makes me want to dream! It is so dreamy, so pop, such a bop! It was the biggest surprise of the Eurovision Song Contest this year because Bulgaria is always ignored. Poli made sure she'd stop that and ranked really high. Her voice is so cute and easy to listen to, the song is so magic, the chorus quite catchy and the song meaning is so nice! On top of that, Poli is breath taking!
If love was a crime then we would be criminals, locked up for life but I'll do the time
7th of 8 appearances of Eurovision Song Contest acts |

14. Alicia Keys - "In Common"
|
Good God. I wasn't expecting such a slayage coming from Alicia Keys. "In Common" is so good, so unique and so fresh! I am quite sad this was ignored but at least it was given a chance. She should've released an album with it as this is light years better than "Blended Family". I really love how Alicia went very upbeat and how this song just fits her perfectly. The song's production is amazing and the lyrics quite epic. The chorus is pure slayage.
If you could love somebody like me, you must be messed up too
2nd and last appearance of Alicia Keys |
13. Ariana Grande - "Be Alright"
|
She still got time to give this song proper single treatment? This should've been a single instead of "Dangerous Woman" or whatever she released from this album. It is so smooth, so relaxing, so appropriate... I don't know, everything about this song slays me so hard. Her vocals, the rhythm, the meaning... She brought her A Game and I can't believe she didn't actually release this as a main single. I will always hope for that.
Baby you just gotta make up your mind that every little thing is gonna be alright
4th and last appearance of Ariana Grande |
12. Fifth Harmony - "That's My Girl"
|
That's My Girls! Now, I'd like to start by saying thank God this wasn't released as the first single of "7/27", they'd have flopped. Nonetheless that doesn't mean I don't love this song like crazy because I totally do. I don't agree with the fact it was released as a single either because it doesn't have that much potential but I am a freaking Harmonizer and I love every song on that amazing album including this one. I love how in sync and how this song gives a chance to all of them. The Camila X Lauren part always gets me.
Got some dirt on your shoulder, then let me brush it off for ya
1st of 4 appearances of Fifth Harmony |
11. Meghan Trainor - "NO"
|
Now this was something I wasn't expecting. As I have said previously, I was anything but a Meghan Trainor fan... Try hater! I hated all of her songs, they are all so stupid and cheesy but then "NO" came and I had to take back all of that. This song has this throwback feeling that just makes me feel so good. It brings me early Britney, DC3, P!NK vibes that I've always loved and I really appreciate how this can easily be a homage to them! Good job, Meghan!
If I want a man, then I'mma get a man but it's never my priority
2nd and last appearance of Meghan Trainor |
NEXT: THE SINGLES - THE FINAL SET!
Thank you so much everyone for your comments.
I truly appreciate it!

Pedro's Glorious 2016: THE END!
The Gloriest Best Of 2016 is now among us.
Welcome.
I am out of breath but I made it! We have a few hours until the Best Of section closes and ATRL goes on a semi-hiatus so let me make the most of it and announce you my very favorite singles of 2016. As I have been saying it wasn't easy. My three main favorite music acts released new music and to rank it was not an easy task but I am really happy with the final result and I think I was fair! Let me show you!
10. Adele - "When We Were Young"
|
I had the chance of seeing Adele live in concert in 2016 and during that show she confessed "When We Were Young" was her favorite song off "25" and she explained that this song was kind of the motto for the new album. I was so happy to hear that because this is my favorite single from her... Of all time! Even better than "Chasing Pavements". The song is so pure, heartfelt and it just has so much meaning to it. The lyrics are so touching and Adele's vocals are flawless. I admit I may have cried a couple of times listening to this beautiful masterpiece.
I'm so mad I'm getting old it makes me reckless
3rd and last appearance from Adele |
09. Barei - "Say Yay!"
|
"Say Yay!" can be perceived as a very basic and generic song and I can't really stand up for it. Afterall it doesn't have the most innovative sound or concept but the reason why I madly love this song has to do with the feeling it portrays. It makes me feel loose and free. It makes me smile, shake it all of, get up and dance! It has a very hopeful and cheerful touch to it and the way Barei sings the song almost containing her emotion just gets me everytime. I can't believe how bad this did in 2016's Eurovision Song Contest.
I feel alive bringing into play
, my whole life going all the way
8th and last appearance from an Eurovision Song Contest act |
08. Beyoncé - "Hold Up"
|
And here's Beyoncé's last appearance. She was the artist with most appearances on this year's Best Of and it had to be with "Hold Up". The song is just too good, too relaxed, the lyrics are on point and the way she sings it so calmly just goes in sync with the song's title. I like how contained she sounds and how it really never explodes and goes over the top like she does a lot of times. "Hold Up" is one of the shiniest tracks on "Lemonade" and I am glad people actually love this song as well!
Can't you see there's no other man above you? What a wicked way to treat the girl that loves you
6th and last appearance from Beyoncé |
07. Fifth Harmony - "Write On Me"
|
It is a shame this song was never anything more than a promotional single. Even with that they managed to get almost 60,000,000 views as for today and that's quite impressive. I feel like this could've done a good job as a main single as it kind of introduces a new side of Fifth Harmony to the GP. "Write On Me" is so sweet, so pure, so uplifting, so passionated... The song keeps you going, makes you smile and, to be honest, it is so radio-friendly. My babes!
Pick up the pen, put it on the paper. Write on my skin, bring me to life
2nd of 4 appearances from Fifth Harmony |
06. Carlos Vives - "La Bicicleta (feat. Shakira)"
|
When I first heard "La Bicicleta", I wasn't too impressed. I appreciated the fact it kind of reminded the (latin) GP of the old Shakira but it didn't click. On top of that, it kind of took a bit of time to kick off but once it did... Wow! The song managed to become a smash and one of the main latin songs of the year. As for today it has more than 600,000,000 views and it won't stop that soon. With time, I started loving this more and more. The song is just so happy, the lyrics are like a breath of fresh air... That little Shakira touch with the inclusion of her boyfriend in the lyrics always gets me giggling! She is such a Queen and I am glad this brought her on the map!
Oyeme Carlos llévame en tu bicicleta que si a mi Pique tu le muestras el Tayrona
1st and only appearance from Carlos Vives
2nd of 3 appearances from Shakira |
05. Fifth Harmony - "All In My Head (Flex) [feat. Fetty Wap]"
|
Let's be honest. "Flex" deserved to smash harder but it was completely overshadowed by "Work From Home" that ended up overshadowing "That's My Girl" as well. It was just too big, I guess. Either way, "Flex" was without a single doubt my summer song. It has this summer vibe and I really thought it was a matter of time until this kicked off and became an anthem. Well, it didn't but it was an amazing single choice and I am glad it became a moderate hit for my girls! The song feels light and so good to listen to!
Curtains like waves closing in all around us, dimming the lights just so that they don't blind us
3rd of 4 appearances from Fifth Harmony
1st and only appearance from Fetty Wap |
04. Shakira - "Chantaje (feat. Maluma)"
|
Without releasing an album, Shakira kind of owned 2016. Besides "La Bicicleta" becoming a smash and "Try Everything" a respected soundtrack song, she released "Chantaje" that in simply 42 days got more than 300,000,000 views on Youtube and is kind of bringing Shakira's name back in the US market - currently #60 in Spotify. The song brings sexyback and kind of serves us with the "La Tortura" of this new generation. The song is sexy, orgasmic and really catchy. Shakira served and it's such a shame this will only be perceived as a buzz single.

03. Britney Spears - "Make Me... (feat. G-Eazy)"
|
I feel like the release of "Make Me..." and "Glory" were a bit rushed. I wasn't ready and I didn't even had the time to create hype around them... And that was good because I could never be ready for the slayage. When I first heard "Make Me...", I couldn't believe my ears. Her voice is quite stripped down, the strongest it has sounded ever since "Circus", the production was flawless, the song was catchy and she finally brough back urbaNEY. Britney brought her A Game back and I was so proud!
Cause you're the flame I can't do without, the fire comes in the sapphire sun

02. Britney Spears - "Slumber Party (feat. Tinashe)"
|
I have to admit that this decision really crashed my heart but I had to be fair with myself and Britney Spears has been dethroned from the (expected) #1 spot. "Slumber Party" could easily be considered one of my favorite songs from Britney Spears of all time. The mixture of Britney's sexy vocals with the song's bold lyrics and its master production are the main ingredients for that. Coming off "Britney Jean", one could never expect Britney would deliver some of her best material in her entire career but she did. "Slumber Party" makes any Britney Spears fan proud as she brought back everything we all wanted.
We use our bodies to make our own videos, put on our music that makes us go ****ing crazy

01. Fifth Harmony - "Work From Home (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)"
|
There couldn't be any other choice and if I had decided to put any other song at #1 that wasn't "Work From Home", I would be lying to myself and not being fair. If there was a song that I played hundreds of times during 2016 it was "Work From Home" and I am certain I will keep on doing that within the next years. I had never thought that a song from Fifth Harmony would hit me as hard as "Worth It" but I was wrong. "Work From Home" showed maturity and evolution and until this day I can't get enough of it... After listening it so many times on my own, on the radios, in the club... The song still sounds so fresh and I dare to say it is one of my favorite songs of all time. I love how the songs kicks in with a very smooth beat and grows until the very end with those flawless high notes and stronger instrumental. "Work From Home" was not only my favorite song of 2016 but one of the biggest smashes of that year... Well deserved!
I ain't worried 'bout nothin'. I ain't wearin' na nada. I'm sittin' pretty, impatient, but I know you gotta...
4th and last appearance from Fifth Harmony
1st and only appearance from Ty Dolla $ign |
THE END.
Thank you so much everyone for your comments throughout the entire Best Of. It was a pleasure being with you guys and I can't wait to be back by next year!
I truly appreciate it!

Make Me and Slumber Party
While the video for Slumber Party >>> song wise I still stand behind Make Me being the better song but still glad they are both TOP 3
Work From Home GREW on me a lot...it was originally gonna be in my worst list, but after the summer I REALLY got back into it
Great list Pedro
