From what I've seem most people weren't saying that people shouldn't protest, they were simply saying that protesting wouldn't change anything. Trump is going to be president whether every person protests or nobody does. Knowing this, why do it?

It is a sham nowadays. It was used back in the day because it was harder to accurately count votes etc. We can count them accurately and quickly now. There's no reason for the electoral college.
