This is honestly my fear about Gaga right now.
I always said after Born This Way (when it was clear that she was starting to turn off some people) that she had two clear choices:
1) go harder and more intense with the Gaga persona, dig into her core fanbase
2) do a stripped back "this is the real Stefani!" era
She obviously tried #1 with ARTPOP. Now she's trying #2. What happens if that doesn't work either? I feel like she's just going to keep changing her whole act, not for the sake of natural artistic growth/evolution, but to endlessly chase
something.
Certain elements of this era (rebranding herself as Joanne, the random pseudo-country bits, the generic AC fodder Million Reasons) feel just as "forced" and "gimmicky" as, say, the meat dress. C2C felt like a totally natural evolution for Gaga, whereas "call me Joanne!" feels like such a blatant, shameless attempt at an image reboot.
Luckily, the leaked snippets restored a LOT of my faith in this era. I was so pleasantly surprised by Hey Girl. It sounds almost Elton John-ish, and that's the sound I've always thought Gaga should go for. I'm trying not to judge too much until I've heard everything in full.
