SWV were one of my favourite R&B groups back in the 90’s. The all-female new jack swing trio catapulted onto the music scene with songs like ‘Weak’ and ‘I’m So Into You’ and they were about real music. The group have been in the studio recording a new album to be released this year. But before gracing the music scene once again, one of the members wrote a blog entry about the sorry ass state of the music industry and the failure of good R&B music in today’s declining musical climate. In part, here’s what Lelee had to say:
.
“Where did that real R&B music go? In my opinion, and I’m sure millions will agree with me, is that the best thing that could have happened with music was the freedom to be able to pick and chose what genre of music you want to listen to. Radio now is fluttered with what I consider ‘Kindergarten snacks’, where the artist just gives you a lollipop and some bubble gum, but the real music fans are still left waiting for a real meal”. Preach sista! I can name so many of these Kindergarten snacks that it can transpire into the thickness of a Harry Potter novel. No kidding. Too much crap is influctuating our radio airwaves and not enough substance. At the end of the day, we’re the listeners and it’s up to us to ensure that good music gets its momentum like it did 15-20 years ago.
