I'm actually surprised by how many religious people there are here on ATRL. Here in Sweden literally no one is religious, except old people

You're so lucky. Sweden is one of the most open-minded country so this isn't surprising. Being an atheist is as taboo as being gay in my country, and majority of them are muslims as if that couldn't make things worse

To be fair, science cannot prove nor disprove God. It's up to the person to choose to believe in it. But why would you believe in something that you don't even know exist? "Because it's called faith". Well good for you, but then stop mixing religion into laws and stop making laws that restrict other people's rights because your 'faith' doesn't have enough proof either. It's not that atheists are mad because religious people believe in God. Do you see how many religious people do the same? There's a lot more of them who do the same AND also oppress us because they are still the majority and therefore have more power. We're just 'mad' at them being a dick and hypocritical. We're just vocal about criticizing it when people just keep quiet about it.

Gurl, that is what I was saying. Science, at least currently (I dont think ever), cannot determine if a higher being actually exists. And I never disagreed with this whole law issue, religious people should not be pushing their religion on to others. Overall, I agree religious people in general are in the majority and have more power, but that doesn't mean atheist people should be disrespectful and belittling others. You're only adding more fuel to the fire.

It's funny how people are so invested with coming to this thread and trying to find holes in atheist's reasoning. I bet if I go to the Christian thread I won't find a list of nonsensical aspects of their religion

I know I was more like agreeing with your post rather than arguing. This kind of atheists vs. religion discussion will never end because no one can give an ultimate proof and people are just gonna believe in what they believe so I figured it's best to keep this to one self. And I agree, we should practice tolerance. Who cares about your beliefs. Some of my best friends are religious but we never talk about our beliefs. Though not gonna lie, I still can't resist to mock people who are so bias and so confident in their point of view

If you are saying this to me I would like you to know I am not trying to find "holes" in atheist's reasoning, I am trying to offer a fair perspective that I think sometimes SOME atheists seem to forget.

Ahh I see I agree, we definitely need to try and respect everyone's beliefs a bit more while not crossing the boundary of pushing it onto others. And although I don't want to mock people, I feel the same way when I see extremely bias people on either side of the spectrum.

What even is a "fair perspective"? This thread is clearly meant for atheists & agnostics to discuss their beliefs and lives as atheists. Coming in to say "hey SOME of you are wrong!!" is like going to the Christian or Muslim thread and attacking certain denominations or aspects of their religions. Yes, science cannot prove the lack of God--so what? People can form their own opinions and deny God regardless.

recently i've actually found that a lot of younger peeps are religious (including a former classmate) which has surprised me bc i was under the same impression as you. i think the difference is that they're not as outspoken about their faith as people are in the us for example so it's not as easy to ~spot them?

I dont get how we are wrong whenever we try to express our opinions on religion. People act as if criticising religion is some kind of taboo.

Hmmm, I think there is a fine line. If you'd like to say "_____ aspect of _______ religion is ridiculous" you can, but please don't say things like "______________ people are so stupid and i hate them".
Like, personally attacking people isn't acceptable, but just like M Andre said criticizing religion isn't a taboo in this thread.

I think when people say things about 'common sense' they're more referring to specific things religious people believe, like the previous Noah's Ark argument that was going on. I don't think anyone would say that it's common sense that there isn't a possibility of a higher power existing.

FINE. A different perspective. One that is not said here that much. I consider my self AGNOSTIC by the way so its not like I am coming in here as a religious person telling you guys off . I just like to say what my "beliefs and life" are as an agnostic person so according to you, I have every right to voice my opinion in here so thanks .

Fair enough, although I do still think some people here would say "common sense" dictates that the existence of a higher being is out of the picture.

Religions are not people; they're literally an ideology, a belief, a set of standpoints. It's like bashing communism, socialism, conservatism, liberalism, Nazism, etc. My initial post had nothing to do with telling anyone they're stupid.
Please don't tell me we're bringing the "Islamophobia" bs to this thread too.

RudeBoyy agrees with you that its fine to criticize religions for what it is, but regardless of your first post, he/she brings up a good point about the disrespect that happens a lot within the atheist/agnostic community. Also Islamophobia is not BS, many Muslim people have to experience the hatred because of the actions of ISIS every day.

Islamophobia is a way to portray many Muslims as the victim of western civilization. There are robust systems put in place to fight personal, verbal, racial and physical harassment. If any alleged "Islamophobia" doesn't classify under any of the aforementioned (or other abusive acts that the government recognizes), then they have to suck it up like any other people belonging to an ideology have to suck up the **** that gets thrown at them.
