Brandy's very first single bows at a respectable #2. Easily her biggest Urban hit & a sure classic, the song speaks about a girl wanting to be "down" for her love interest. Brandy was only about FOURTEEN when she recorded this song. At age 14, I was in the 8th grade getting mad at my friends for laughing at me. Meanwhile Brandy was just effortlessly KILLING the girls with her debut.
I'm not gonna lie, at first listen. I did not like this song. But as time went on, it grew on me A LOT. The more I listened, the more I loved it. She really slayed this so hard. And the live performances are EVERYTHING.
The video actually created the signature hand move that Brandy was known for (along with her iconic braids). This move, for some reason was used all the time and thousands of people were asking Brandy how to do it when it's just a simple hand motion
supa thinks "Sensual and mature, Brandy easily carries a timeless longing that feels far beyond her 15 years. It’s hard to ask for a more perfect debut single."
Agreed. It was perfect everything.
Fun fact about this song: Brandy did not like it at first. When she recorded it, she didn't want to release it because she wasn't a fan of it. She wanted to do something completely different, but her label (and mother) convinced her it was the right move and she went with it. In Typical Brandy fashion, after it smashed she ate her words and now loves the song.
This might just be me, but can't you imagine the song getting a remix and then becoming a stripper song? There's a lot of innuendos about having sex, so it's clearly the next step. If Brandy didn't sing the song like a child/innocently, it totally could have been the next Adina Howard sex anthem.
...And the Winner is none other than the LEGENDARY Full Moon.
This is truly the best song she has ever done and I'm SO glad it ended up winning (I swear I didn't rig it). The song goes SO hard and sounds SO smooth. As soon as it starts, with that piano, it transitions into the dance/Jam it was. The first line "Boooooooy" is so haunting and so skillfully done... WOO. The vocals on this song are on another level and she's never topped them IMO. From the harmonies in the background of the song, the song was masterfully done and provides anything you could want in a song. The entire song just tells the story that we see in the video. When the 2nd verse starts, they start to get closer. It's insane how the song just gives you a proximity of how close Brandy is to her lover. First verse she notices him, Second verse she makes her move towards him, and then finally the BRIDGE. The bridge you can practically hear Brandy close to this man and looking into his eyes. And then BAM. The final chorus. Those god-libs SOAR as she adds something different each time giving the song more and more and more of what it was missing. It's honestly the most perfect song.
Although Darkchild was the executive producer on Full Moon, the title track was actually produced & written by the producer Mike City. You guys probably have no idea who he is, but he's responsible for a good amount of tracks. He actually produced on Two Eleven, 8701 by Usher & even A Girl Like Me by Rihanna (who we know is a Brandy stan).
Supaspaz said "The racing, effervescent bounce of the track carries you along just like that heart-pulsing excitement of love at first sight. It’s murderously good." I agree COMPLETELY! The bouncing is just so excellent.
Fun fact about this song: Although it was the 2nd single off Full Moon, it got very limited promotion & barely got a video actually. At the time the song was released, Brandy was about 6 months pregnant. She later went on to perform the song live and was barefoot when she did it.
Lowkey, she didn't do too well, but I can understand why since she was pregnant. I'm so proud of her for not lip-syncing given the circumstance though. Cause some women like to lip-sync live performances when they're pregnant. *cough* Beyoncé *cough* Given the predicament, Brandy still sang her heart out to the best of her abilities during the ad-libs at the end.
Here's a story though. So I initially heard this song for a rate on ATRL back in like... 2012 or something. It was actually a Brandy vs Monica vs Aaliyah rate. The first time I heard it, I heard some stupid ass remix of the song and so I gave it a really low score. When the scores were revealed, supa posted the video and I heard the actual song for the first time and I was literally SLAIN. It was LOVE at first listen. I was so mad, so I see Full Moon's victory in this rate as a way to avenge my wrongdoing 4 and half years ago
Full Moon actually had a 10+ average for a while, but ~9.5 is amazing Good job everyone.
Y'all are complete trash, I love Full Moon but no way it deserved to win. Please tell who had a better debut single??? I wanna be down runs >> she was ****ing 14 WHO THE **** WAS DOING IT AGE THAT AGE. Anyone who gave this song lower than a 10, can kiss my ass.
Amazing finish! Brandy's best single in terms of runs and adlibs.
This rate proves she's truly an album artist, there are tons of Brandy songs I prefer over the ones rated but they weren't singles. Her discography is really amazing, and even to have her last album 2/11 aide in it and not take away from it so late in her career is amazing.
