I mean, on the one hand I think movies like this can be good because they can potentially draw western audiences into a movie that predominately features a lot of popular Asian actors they aren't familiar with. I just hope those characters are actually significant and well-developed and not just token props.
But she's dead on about Hollywood needing to be open to taking risks in casting POC in leading roles. It's so hypocritical that on its face, Hollywood tends to to be super liberal and progressive, yet remains one of the most archaic industries.
I thought it was so off that they cast him as the lead when I watched the trailer
He just doesn't fit in with the rest of the asian cast and feels out of place
Like, how did a white guy get there in the time period in which the film is set?
Good on her for speaking up
MESS! Whitewashing knows no bounds! They will cast white people as anyone. Glad she is speaking up. More people need to in order for this foolishness to change!
Love! If Marvel were really smart they would be looking at Constance Wu for any important role! She's a fabulous actress with great comedic chops that brings both a subtle depth and gravitas! Watch "Fresh Off the Boat" if you haven't.
I also would challenge non Asian POC to speak up about this blatant whitewashing! I recently read a John Cho piece in The Vulture, and he said something along the lines of- "I do pretty great for an Asian actor in Hollywood. But I still haven't gotten the opportunities to show my talents completely. Truly devastating remarks coming from Hollywood's go to Asian actor.
