Can somebody say fan favourite? Lonely got the most 11s out of any song in the rate and it's not hard to see why. Janet makes a very heartfelt plea here, reaching out to listeners that she will be there for them if they ever need a friend. The flute on this is especially nice! One thing I love about Janet's discography that you see in this song is its openness to interpretation, reading an article on her best songs mentioned this with a potential sexual subtext? Her reaching out in hornyness for the lonely party. I can hear that if I try! Though it isn't how I interpret the song it's cool to hear other people's ideas and this song is really just a great fuzzy sounding number. No wonder it got those 11s.

Ivory. loves the vocals on this and Vilppu also thinks it's "so soothing and relaxing, and works really well after all the bops." ECNEICSNOC stans down, "This is such a beautiful slice of quiet storm. Possibly her 2nd best straight up (no Paula) ballad." It is really gorgeous.
11-giver Auburn call it his "all-time favorite Janet song, I identify with it so much." Aw, the power of Janet!

Not my ideal winner, but hey! She's pretty fine. This was an instant favourite the first time I played the album, and although it isn't anymore it is still a really good song. I think what separates this from Velvet Rope is that here Janet is complemented by Kathleen and not overshadowed. Her attitude here is really noteworthy, she has a spunk or anger that feels a bit more adult or mature than the attitude on say Nasty did, and I think songs like this really lay the foundation for What About or similar themed songs. It has a 7 minute running time, but it uses every bit of that to make a truly awesome picture.

Auburn thinks it's "truly epic", but ECNEICSNOC argues that it's "not as epic as it thinks it is, but enjoyable, nonetheless." rockwitu08 thinks " those opera vocals are orgasmic" and eli's_rhythm is mixed in his praise, "Great, but overrated."

Though not my personal choice, I think it;s fitting that this final write-up goes to the winner. Take it away, Vilppu!
"One of Janet, her longest songs, and definitely makes use of all of its (nearly) 7 minutes. It honestly has everything: an outstanding vocal performance, both by Ms. Jackson whose personality elevates it to an almost unreachable level, and Kathleen Battle, without her soprano it wouldn't be half as remarkable. Both the verses and the chorus are very strong on their own, but only as a sum they make something out-of-this-world perfect. Despite the fact that janet. as a whole has a bit of 1990s feeling, it's not timeless, This Time still sounds incredibly fresh and inspiring. It also features one of my favourite lyrics by her, it's Janet at her most confident and in fact emotional, even if she tries to stay cold and distanced. And the 'you're dismissed' at the very end! All in all, it just seems like a complete track and kind of her magnum opus." Amen.
