Not really. For a good stretch of time critics (chiefly from indie-leaning publications) would only recognize, like, one pop artist in order to prove they didn't have some anti-pop bent. Robyn (and, to a lesser extent, Annie) was randomly appointed as that artist for the longest time, quite possibly because her relative obscurity could be contorted into some lame ~2cool4mainstream~ narrative even though her sound was still incredibly mainstream-sounding
In the last six or seven years there's been a gradual shift where it's been more and more possible for critics to take pop artists more seriously and include more than, like, one on any one of their year-ends. 2015 also saw The Weeknd, Drake, Adele, and even Selena Gomez get some prominent year-end placements. And 2014 had Ariana.
