I live near one that had just been completed when Chernobyl happened so they closed it before it was even functional. Thank God!

Can't they put a lead capsule over it or whatever, & then seal it forever? Some people will discover it in 1000s of years and will be dropping dead from a "curse", like they did after raiding Egyptian graves.

Nothing's happening to him. The photo was just taken with a very slow shutter speed in order to capture enough light that the elephant's foot is visible. It's very dark down there. The "fire" looking stuff is just the light trails from his head torch being captured over a period of a few seconds.

The town itself is so eerie to look at, especially the photos of the fairground that was due to open shortly afterwards. It's like going in a time machine.

And the voice that was used to announce the evacuation is so creepy

it kind of looks like he's getting zapped by a supervillains laser
