 no is a cute song but im already over it. i like the late 90's teen pop feel but that may be a curse. the song sounds really dated. she reminds me of all the other blonde pop stars that came out after britney was on top of the world.   |

 I wonder how Nicki would have fared in the top ten with Starships with YouTube being included in the Hot 100.   |

 even though a top 10 debut is a good thing, the massive decrease from the sales of problem is pretty unimpressive, especially since my everything was such a hugely successful era. i think people can give as many reasons for this as they want, and i won't judge it immediately as a flop because of this (especially since i just posted that you shouldn't do that...), but it's not a good sign at all, and i'm definitely not impressed.
 i think if she had released the right song that would catch on the way problem did, she would have had at least somewhat better of an opening week. i don't expect a HUGE one, but being over 300k less is pretty dire. (i guess you could say focus was the next single directly after the album, but it debuted with even less...) i mean, let's compare with some of the songs after strong eras that did end up being big hits from artists with previously good initial sales weeks:

 roar --> 557,000
 shake it off --> 544,000
 boyfriend --> 521,000
 not afraid --> 380,000 (i guess relapse wasn't that strong of an era, but it was still ok)

 and that's not counting the ones who weren't previously known for high sales weeks.

		| So, to recap the quirky chronology: Grande was the first artist to debut in the Hot 100's top 10 with the first single from each of her first three albums … then wasn't when "Focus" was no longer the lead single from her third set … but now is again (!), since the new title single opens in the top 10. | This sounds kinda shady
I see you Billboard    |

 | ok if debut week sales are down so much, why did adele sell over 1 million recently? : P debut weeks for major artists are actually not down nearly as much as overall sales.  |

 Ariana's streaming
The next Riri. She will easily be #1 on the Billboard 200 when her album comes even if Blake gets more pure sales.  |

That, plus the fact that Ariana's fanbase skews younger and thus streams disproportionately (compared to someone like Eminem, who has many adult fans) explains a lot. It doesn't explain everything for sure, but it's a huge factor.

I agree that the hype for DW was lower than the hype for Focus. That + her lack of an adult fanbase + sales' precipitious decline + the song being very different for her were the main factors imo.  |
