Missy is back!!! And better than she has been for YEARS now. Get rid of Pharrell and this is just
Highlight lyric: Backs breakin' like a percolation
3. The Weeknd - Acquanited
This is basically 90s R. Kelly, updated to today with Abel's own touches on it. So basically it's a masterpiece mmhm. It's grown into my favorite track from him since the Trilogy days (Kiss Land the song, gives it some competition though).
Highlight lyric: I got 'em wanting to embrace their sins, These girls born in the '90s are dangerous
2. Carly Rae Jepsen -E·MO·TION
My favorite song off Carly's album, and my favorite pop song of the year; is the most underrated song off her album. This song just embodies everything she was going for on the album all in one song. It's pop perfection and I don't use that term lightly.
Highlight lyric: In your fantasy, dream about me; And all that we could do with this emotion
And.... my #1 song is....
1. Miguel – GFG
My SOTY The most addictive song for me on WILDHEART, and it's been my SOTY since it came out Miguel is finding his groove in “trying to be sexy” and exude that confidence in his music and he nails it here completely.
Highlight lyric: Well, the entire pre-chorus:
Quote:
Got that look in her eye like "yeah"
Got her looking for a *****, wanna cry now
I wanna give it to her now like, right now
Hit the hotel like lights out
Bad as a mother****er, that's no doubt
Let my name live in your mouth
WTF is a bop I wish the chorus was a little better so I'd love it more, but it's still nice. Pharrell was actually tolerable in it, too! Acquainted is okay from what I remember, I believe it's on the better half of BBTM so that's good.
EMOTION Amazing amazing amazing, just like the rest of the album. Great pick for the runner-up spot.
OPN perfects his aesthetic that he's set out for himself here. There's the loud, thumping tracks that still manage to sound layered and intricate as if there was thought in every little detail; and the more seemingly simple tracks that are still rich as ever. If this is a sign of what's to come, count me in for the ride.
2. Vince Staples – Summertime '06
My Rap AOTY, Vince surpassed all expectations here on his debut. Everything is amazing, from his rapping on the technical side of things, to production, melodies & songwriting. Yes it's a double disc which can be intimidating but it's such a rewarding listen. Clams Casino is amazing and after all these years No I.D. STILL has it but Vince manages to not let the beats be the star of the show. Tackling all things from relationships, to depression to life in the hood in exceptional fashion is noteworthy also.
1. Carly Rae Jepsen - E•MO•TION
This is the album we want out faves to drop. This is the album that pop fans across the globe want but don't even know they want it. First things first; there's melodies that we don't forget or get sick of after 3 listens which is a tremendous feat in itself these days. Carly just has a voice tailor made for pop music, it's pleasant with a really cute tone that just works for all the songs here, from the slow jams like All That to the more ~alternative~ jams like Warm Blood to the pure bubblegum pop like I Really Like You. Carly perfectly executes all the ideas she's going for. The synths are A LOT warmer then I think we've gotten used to with the much cleaner mixing that we hear in 21st Century pop; so she really captures that 80s feel but manages to do it without making it sound like someone wanting to make an 80s album. I can go on and on about this record; it's not perfect, but it's the best album I heard in 2015 and the most addictive, by the fact of my not only loving it the most but it also being my most played album by 100+ plays more than S 06. I thought Kiss was a really good album, but this kinda blew me away. Well done Carly Rae!
Favorite Tracks:
1. E•MO•TION
2. Warm Blood
3. I Really Like You
4. Run Away With Me
5. Making The Most of The Night
I really wasn't expecting EMOTION as your number one for whatever reason I love it though What a great album. I also know the track you were going to drag me for in my album ranking
Great top 3 though. I love OPN and Vince! We had Vince in the same spot. He's a great talent, and really just takes you into the world of the album.
It's been a Wickedly cool best of. I found some new artists too! Thanks for hosting
