Are new popstars completely lacking?
This is kind of random but I was just watching a bunch of "MTV Diaries" on YouTube of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Avril Lavigne to name a few and I just can't help but to think how uninteresting, lacking, and boring most popstars are nowadays. It's like the industry decided to take bland, basic every day teenagers off the street and turn them into unconvincing popstars.
Who from this decade that has debuted is REALLY here to stay? I mean, Lorde was probably the biggest contender but she pretty much fell off the face of the Earth and even she sort of lacks the spark that previous generation's popstars have had. Meghan Trainor is probably second place but I mean, the girl is about as exciting as a caesar salad. And it's not just the girls that are boring... the boys are equally as big of a snoozefest as well.
A lot of ya'll are blaming the "relatable popstar" trend for the reason why they're so meh but I think it just has to do with the overall lack of star power and talent. The newer crop of popstars are terrible to average singers, have none to little stage presence, and come equipped with completely disposable and forgettable music. Have ya'll seen the tragedy that has been the award shows the past few years? (Grammy's included ) Is it a sign of the industry's sheer laziness?
Like, in all honesty, the music comes second to mainstream acts nowadays, this has been pretty evident because if you go down the iTunes charts, for every decent song there is about 40 terrible ones. But if the music is to come second, don't you think labels should be signing people with ACTUAL star power? Personally, I'm just entirely underwhelmed by the music industry nowadays and hope to see a resurgence of genuine creativity and excitement in the future... maybe this decade just needs to pass or something?
Edit: Stop coming at me with "Are Britney, Avril, and Christina good examples of amazing popstars" or whatever because they as artists are specifically not the point of this thread, I happened to stumble across their "MTV Diaries" which made me think of how uninteresting the current pop climate is

Yes.
I don't really like any of the newcomers. I miss the old music stars.
Timbaland, Akon, Nelly Furtado, B.E.P, Fergie, Gwen, Beyonce, Rihanna, Amerie, Cassie, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Eminem, PCD,
That era was the BEST. Now, we have these teen instagram/twitter/youtube stars that think they're all that, the music is bland and nothing new and fresh.
I miss the old days so much.

Like, I thought to myself "well maybe I'm just getting older and nostalgia is coming into play" but like, I had this conversation with my 58 year old mom (LOL) and even she was talking about how awful this decade in music is and that it has nothing to do with nostalgia, most of the music and people are just genuinely really bad

Hmm, good points
Personally I would argue all the interesting artists these days are in the indie scene or aren't popular enough to be considered pop stars or whatever.

I agree. Lady Gaga is the last pop act I really liked.

I mean they're not the MOST interesting, but I mean, when you compare them to their equivalents now..... I was just watching "MTV diaries" and those were the ones I chose lol

Man Lorde is truly good but she's not pop star. You're talking about artists having something unique and got the WOW factor. I could say Lorde, Sam Smith, Tori Kelly, Tinashe are promising..but still different from the thing you're talking about

yet when they get into trouble like Britney and Xtina, they're not boring anymore lmao! Bieber and Miley aren't exactly boring, they're always up to something. also, back then the internet and technology wasn't at the palm of your hands. news travels really fast now. celebrities have had to tone it down a lot more now that people have cell phones with cameras and can literally up load anything for the entire world to see/hear in seconds. can you imagine how many more scandals etc would be brought to light if social media and all this advanced technology existed back then?! And mind you; Madonna, MJ, Cher, Elton, The Rolling Stones, Tina Turner, etc had waaaaayyy more scandals/drama than Britney, Xtina and their generation. Far crazier **** was done but they could get away with it. nowadays, you fart and the other side of the world will hear it before you smell it.
i mean i kind of agree with you but we also have to consider the things i mentioned. if celebs could get away with a lot more **** i bet you this generation would be wilder.

You make a valid point..... maybe social media is to blame??? But Bieber and Miley being "wild" is equally boring and predictable tbh

Eh I think the climate is different with the way we consume our entertainment perpetually evolving and becoming more and more customizable to cater to individual taste. Audiences are now becoming so segmented and it's easy to insulate yourself from the latest up and comers in favor of the already familiar; so it's getting more and more difficult for younger acts to achieve that elite, household name status that extends beyond the youth circuit and all of the bonafide star feel that goes with it.

I think it is a mixture of nostalgia and the fact that the music isn't really up to snuff. I mean there are some promising new pop stars out there, but the ones that ATRL likes to back (Demi, Selena, Ari, Fifth Harmony, etc) are for the most part putting out fairly subpar music.
Also albums as a piece of work are completely irrelevant to the current pop star. Just look at the garbage sequencing on My Everything. Like I'd say of the current crop Ari has the most potential, but she is def wasting it more often than not.
The really big pop stars of the 80s and 90s were able to put out albums with massive singles that also were a complete piece of work. Part of it has to do with the crap attention span of the teenage music listeners that the industry caters to, but as a young person who likes to listen to a full album it is getting annoying.
Most of the present day artists I listen to aren't topping the charts and more often than not I find myself getting into major pop artists of past generations because the current crop is lacking.

Yeah, definitely. I think Gaga was the last real interesting major popstar; the current generation of Selenas, Arianas and other just...aren't interesting. Sure, they've come straight off the back off hit Disney/Nickelodeon shows, but there nothing as captivating as what we had with Britney or Christina during their prime. It's too safe and regular; Gaga (and Beyonce with self-titled) was the last one to shake things up.

Agree 100%. For me, only Ariana is pretty decent pop star.
