Because Madonna was underperforming in the early 90s.
She was selling 10s of millions of albums in the 80s even scored a 4x platinum album at the end of the 80s.
As she started getting overtly sexual she lost sales.
I would consider erotica and bedtime stories underperformers.
Back then they'd ship 2M albums in the US the first month or two. the promotion and the success of the singles would make it go further.
Erotica went 2x platinum in 3 months and hasn't budged since. WHY? because she released the sex book and got the public in a frenzy but then received overwhelming backlash.
Something to remember and bedtimestories were her two eras where she let the GP decided how far to go and she toned it down to appease the GP.
Results 2x platinum similar to Erotica but AFTER Evita and Ray of light acclaim it eventually went 3x platinum in 2000.
You should know that 2x platinum for an A list artist in the 90s was not SUCCESS...it was mediocre.
So many B and C list artists were getting 2x and 3x platinum albums at that time.
other a listers like Whitney, celine, Mariah and Janet were selling over 5-6xM consistently.
Please do your homework.
