I think because Obama was going to be there and there is no way he was going to be standing next to Biden if he was going to announce he was running.

Declaring in the Rose Garden with Obama by his side and members of the cabinet in the message would've declared the message that Obama endorses Biden, which typically isn't appropriate, especially when Hillary was also in the Obama administration. If he had held the conference in a gymnasium or in a stadium or something, they would guess that he was running because that's more typical.

At what stage would Obama endorse Hillary? Would it have to be after she becomes the nominee?

No way he does it this early, he would probably wait until at least the Super Tuesday Firewall that effectively ends Sanders' chances at a nomination unless he somehow picks up steam (which isn't out of the question)

I think he could endorse her. The Clintons endorsed him. Isn't there a pressure for him to reciprocate?
And when it comes to the 2 horse race, isn't it his duty to support democrat regardless of the candidate?

Well the Clintons only endorsed him after they lost. If she wins I wouldn't be surprised if he did, and for the reason you stated. As the president he would NEVER publically support one democratic nominee over another. Though even if he wanted to, I'm 55% certain it wouldn't be Clinton lol

Very true they did endorse him in 2012 when they didn't have to. But tbh he was the incumbent so it was not too significant. And I believe Bill was a headliner because he was (and still is) the most popular living president who happens to be a dem and his wife was Secretary of State under Obama. Not saying his keynote wasn't important but it also wasn't surprising.

But, if Clinton does become the nominee, I expect a full backing from the Obamas. At the very least if an interviewer asks them if they would endorse Hillary they'd both say yes (assuming they both haven't come out to endorse her on their own volition)

Well it's true she doesn't need it by the time it becomes appropriate but it's not so much the endorsing, it's the campaigning.

Imagine. Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden (possibly), and her VP all campaigning at trails in the general election for her. The amount of star power/man power would be incredible and pretty much unheard of

Of all the Democratic candidates, Clinton is the one that aligns the closest to him. Sanders is too far left to ever be in consideration, and O'Malley is too. Clinton is more moderate and shares many common views with the White House. Only recently has she started splintering off but that was an attempt to differentiate from Biden.

nah. Clinton has a better relationship with Joe than she has with Obama. She used to have a weekly breakfast with Joe to catch up on gossip at the White House. She never had weekly meals with Obama.
