The difference is that she actually could act and sing a bit but she sold her soul and became a sex symbol for fame which completely overshadowed her abilities.
Comparing that to Kim who's a product of her mom's great managing skills and the urban culture's thirst to have a caucasian woman that appears somewhat ethnic morph her body to have urban appeal and then sell back to them and still appeal to a wider audience is just smart marketing against a less than smart group.
I mean there's people that still believe there's truth in that reality show they do.

It's quite off but then again I don't think many younger generations understand the catch 22 behind Marilyn monroe which is why they quickly grasp to Kim is the new marilyn.
