Britney became an icon with the 2000 VMAs performance of Oops! with the skin colored outfit, she became a legend after she managed to comeback with Circus, she did what everyone thought was impossible. IMO that's what makes a legend for me, doing the impossible. Britney came back from mental illness, near death, a terrible marriage, and it was legendary. Beyoncé faced pregnancy rumors, her first big commercial underperformance, and then she did the impossible and dropped an album with no promotion for $17 with big budget videos for every song. They did the impossible and it made them legends.

She became an icon pretty quickly, but she'll never ever be a legend.

The massive success surrounding the top debut of both 3 and HIAM cemented her as a legend, icing it off with the MJVG award in 2011.

Britney became an icon after she performed with legends like Madonna, and Christina together in 2003. For the legend part, Brit will never become 1, mostly because she isn't respected.

I don't think Britney is a legend. But she became an icon after OIDIA being a hit. She became an icon so quickly because her success was so huge to begin with and she maintained it.

I don't think Beyonce is a legend either, but I think she became an icon when she proved that she was here to stay with her debut era.

Britney was an instant icon with BOMT.
She was a MEGA HUGE pop star 1999-2010.
She reached legened status in 2011 during the FF era.
