nothing would have 'smashed', necessarily. some things may have worked better than others but applause and (mainly) dwuw WERE the exact songs she needed to save herself after born this way, but at that point people just weren't here for the artist.
the best way it could have gone would have been a surprise release just to at least mask the era with two seconds of perfect execution. the massive run up to ap did not work in her favour.
