Back when I was a student, I rationed in the bad weeks on 5 euro per week. Adding a bag of potatoes or spaghetti could change everything.
29 dollars per week in a country with low minimum wage (fast food is so cheap, that you can't even cook for that price, thus eating out is more popular in the US) and impossible cheap meat. Because of legal usage of hormones in food industry versus European no hormones meat costing between 5 to 10 times more than American meat.
