The former star of The Parkers, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as the title character's abusive, domineering mother in Precious, writes in an essay in the Feb. 27 issue of The Hollywood Reporter that director-producer Lee Daniels clued her in just a few months ago.


Noting that an Oscar win "normally does" lead to "more respect, choices, money" in the business, Mo'Nique writes, "But I got a phone call from Lee Daniels...And he said to me, 'Mo'Nique, you've been blackballed.' I said, 'Why?' And he said, 'Because you didn't play the game.'"

Mo'Nique also writes that she was offered the role of Forest Whitaker's wife in Lee Daniels' The Butler, a part that ultimately went to Oprah Winfrey; a role in the Daniels-produced Fox hit Empire; and the role of Richard Pryor's grandmother [also now set to be played by Oprah] in the upcoming biopic Daniels is working on—but, she adds, "they all just went away."

But be real, her role in Precious was a fluke either way. She's a full-figured black woman who is most known for her comedic roles. She was never going to make it in Hollywood the way other black actresses have. If anything, she needs to go back to stand-up comedy and sitcoms. That is her bread and butter. Waiting around for another powerful role is like waiting for Gabourey to lose weight.

She refused to participate in the "Oscar campaign" ( which is basically the Hollywood equivalent of running for Homecoming Queen) and pissed off a lot of figureheads by refusing to kiss anyone's ass during awards season.

Honestly, she deserved it if she didn't want to play the game. If the name of the game is to kiss ass and campaign for the movie, then do it and move on. Don't not do it, think that you are going to be fine for not doing it, and think you are going to leave unscathed.

I wouldn't be surprise if they only gave her that Oscar as a reminder. Not saying that she didn't deserve it, but she got the Oscar and they could have easily snub her and blacklisted her.
