That it asks these opposing questions about gender and marriage in such darkly entertaining fashion is what makes Gone Girl such a resonant success. Smartly shot, detailed (the opening and closing credits have a ghostly simplicity to them that gave me chills), and performed, it’s a designer-made studio film that dares to be about big, difficult stuff. It’s also often very funny. But that doesn’t mean you’ll leave the theater with a bounce in your step. If you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself in a bruised funk for a few days after. Cool as this movie is, it’s twice as cruel.
