I feel like Marry The Night was her emotional release as a single (not including promo singles). As great as the antics and costumes and imagery were, that was probably the one time she could have just been herself and let loose. More ballad performances, less of the full (even though I love them). She was trying to convey honesty about herself through the song and through the music video, it probably would have done better that way.
That being said, Marry The Night should have followed You and I. Despite You and I being Gaga's most remembered song in the USA post Telephone, it kinda killed things and murdered any chance of momentum to Marry The Night. Hard synth to folksy rock ballad to hard synth is not a very appealing transition.
