It's not true. I finally was able to see video of the live stream. Kim, Kendall and Kylie were on their phones during commercial. In the video, they are showing people backstage walking around and people in the audience. Music can be heard playing, which indicates the show is on break. When I look at my DVR I see that the show was on break. On the stream at 342:36, Common is announced immediately after the show comes back from commercial.

Common begins speaking a few moments later, the stream camera goes to Kim and her sisters. Kylie is the ONLY ONE who looks at a phone. Kim turns and quickly says something to Kendall as Common continues to speak and then Kim stops and looks back at Common onstage as he talks about how hip hop is an instrument for social change. Kim does not speak again while the camera is on them and neither does Kendall. Kylie's head remains down while she looks at her phone. When Common asks for a moment of silence, Kim bows her head, Kendall looks around and Kylie's head remains down into her phone. I don't think Kylie was even paying attention to what was being said the whole time Common was up there. c

They also showed the same exact reaction shot of KIm TWICE during the SAME segement. ( the Kanye impersonation once). MTV probably edits these shots.
