They feed off Monsters (and other fanbases) giving them Twitter traffic begging the "station" to play their hits. In return, their followers and mentions go up to make them look like a legit station. Add a fancy website and a Twitter verification, and they're quite the believable scam.
Apparently no one here from Toronto has heard of it, but the Monsters need the validation so. It ain't going to change Katy getting her 1 millionth 5x+ platinum single and definitely isn't going to change G.U.Y. not even hitting Radar sales.

If Payola was real and still utilized in the traditional sense, Unconditionally would have hit # 1. Are there still incentives used? Yes. and most labels have ways to skate around it. An indie internet radio station with a freebie website should have been the first hint they were fake though.

Y'all do realise that record companies are a business, right? They don't have the money to pay every pop radio station in the country to pay to play her songs. #1s alone don't draw in cash when you're paying for them.
