I'm not even sure anymore
I think Gaga expected to slay, but she severely miscalculated how much BTW + a few years out of the spotlight damaged her. She thought ARTPOP would smash no matter what.
But now she's just doing whatever the **** she wants, and I'm cool with that. After her mini-blackout, she seems really happy again regardless of how it's selling. I 100% believe in her ability to slay again when she wants to (upcoming Britney/Gaga collab??), but I also think she has a whole complex with being torn down and re-emerging. I think she gets some weird pleasure out of letting this era continue to flounder (even though it was not originally intended to), so then the media can be all "SHE'S BACK!!!" when she finally decides to get her act together.

But really what I think happened:
Gaga: I want to do an album about ARTPOP
Label: Okay sure just have to us in five months
Gaga: *logs onto LM.com* ARTPOP is experimental, rave, j-pop, immature, fun, and really cool n awesome two parter!
*five months*
Label: What is this ****? We can't release this
Gaga: Okay, drawing board *crack* oh my hip!
*recovering period*
Gaga: I'm not ready to come back
Label: Too bad, we need our biggest cash cow out
Gaga: Ugh okay well I guess Applause? I mean I guess that makes sense. At this point I can release my **** droppings and it'll go #1
Label: Yeah, yeah and we'll get popular people like R. Kelly, T.I., Too Short, and Twista and a whole bunch of other **** that has nothing to do with your album
And then it all goes to hell, Gaga learns her lesson, drops some people, and recovers

Nobody calculates a messy era that makes no sense whatsoever.
She's just suffering the same fate that many many popstars face...public fatigue. Truth is, she hasn't reinvented herself enough to sustain interest. Still pulling same tricks and its just not shocking anymore.
Meanwhile, her songs have also gotten weaker.

Shouldn't you be spamming people's walls and PMs about reporting Lady Gaga fans...

The most alarming thing about the little monster fan base, to me, is the way monsters create elaborate, convoluted excuses for why X, Y, or Z is going wrong. I remember when I used to troll the original ladygaga.com forum during the BTW era (before it was dismantled for consisting of only troll/hate/meltdown threads), the monsters were deluding themselves into thinking that Judas "flopped" because Gaga was executing an elaborate performance art piece dedicated to exploring the phenomenon of Judas and his three betrayals (it was suggested that Judas's leak/rush release, poor quality, and chart underperformance represented each of Judas's 3 betrayals to Jesus.) Threads like these remind me of those glory days
