J.Cole is one of the handful of new generation rappers that people do take seriously in rap. People feel that his mixtapes are better and that he's much better than what his album material presents him to be.

No he really isn't.
His goal(at the beginning) was to be seen as a young Kanye but pretty much no one cared(iirc the album isn't even gold). His debut is leaps and bounds better than Born Sinner and theres really no arguing otherwise. Born Sinner began with the incredibly fresh Power Trip and then he sent out Crooked Smile for a quick lil hit. I haven't heard/seen him anywhere since that song ran his course. Its the Miguel curse, king kills eras!

So i just listened to my first Madonna albums, Erotica and Hard Candy, is it wrong to say i prefer Hard Candy to Erotica, its a good album but Hard Candy is better imo.

Yes he is.

You don't sell over 250k+ twice without having some sort of clout in the rap community. Only rap artists with a true following in the hip hop crowd do that. All of J. Cole's material gets compared or degraded to his mixtape material. He's held to a standard of his former self. People have mainly criticized him for having so much more to him than what his albums present. He is not a Wiz, or A$AP, or Big Sean. He's bigger and more respected than any of them.
