BTW seemed catastrophic at the time but all it really did was create a backlash from her key demographic. Which I always knew would take its toll at the start of the new era (this one). But critically the content of the album fared relatively well considering and she could still boast 700k first week numbers (thats the number when you subtract the amazon sales which youre all so annoying about). There was conviction within her execution of that era even when some people didnt respond to it positively and that showed through.
ARTPOP, however, has given her a critical
and a media backlash. Both of which can ruin her more than the erosion of fans which could always spike back up given a good review. Her support from her key demographic eroded with the Born This Way era and that ultimately effected ARTPOP in the long run. I believe this era shes kind of lost conceptually and has lost touch with how to sell herself well which has affected ARTPOP. Then of course, the constant bashings from the media in regards to her under-performance compared to previous eras also heavily persuades people to not get into this record probably moreso. Because while this album isnt like
veryexciting or whatever its still just as catchy and as hit worthy as her contemporaries and if it werent for their constantly being indirectly persuaded to dismiss her I think theyd respond well to it. But see, in a way the critical lashings are kind of necessary imo because even though this album is underrated in terms of its standard pop quality, I think they didnt want to just let her go with a slap on her wrist for being conceptually muddy/messy this time and honestly they shouldn't. Most of the reviews are like "yeah this song is good and this song is good but you cant be so conceptually lofty and release something thats just standard enjoyment" and from
that point of view I find the general response justified. Imo its considered a failure because its unaccepted by critics. Had she at
least had critics on her side I think the tune would be a little different.
Totally went on a fan rant and I didn't even mean to.
