I just don't think the production lends to the song that well. I'm actually a huge fan of Fernando Garibay (his work on Marry The Night and The Edge of Glory is above anything) but he really dropped the ball there.
I appreciate what it stands for and it was a very bold move on her part. It's a fun bop. The melody, imo, is still a bit reminiscent of Express Yourself but I'm not really a fan of that song either. That was accidental but a part of me can still hear it. But it's ok because Fashion of His Love is so much more obviously a rip off than BTW is. I think it would have been better as an album track for the fans. It is what it is and is iconic because of it.
It obviously has elements from many Madonna songs but she intended for that IMO. And I think it really helped to separate her from her peers considering she could have gone anywhere after TF/M and she chose equality. That speaks volumes about her IMO and I'm glad she did it.

Obviously she was not looking ahead for her career - the single might have advanced the fight for marriage equality and equal treatment but that was very detrimental to a lot of fans that she alienated. Bad Kids showed a rocker edge and could have gotten her some additional acclaim. But what does she choose? Probably the worst choice for a single in history for someone riding on controversy (but a flawless song nonetheless).

Everything about Born This Way was iconic other than the image she put out during the BTW Single era and TEOG era. One of the few albums by a pop star that truly felt experimental and progressive.
