Once again, if one child paints a picture of a realistic house with perspective and shading and another kid paints a square and a triangle in the same colour you would say the first child is a better painter. That does not mean he IS a painter, but in the realm of painting, in this specific comparison, he is a better painter.
If your friend's mom cooks a great meal superior to your own mother's you can say she is a better cook than your mom. Is she a professional cook dedicated to the art of food? No. But she is a better cook. This is pretty common. I'm not sure why you're fighting this. It's how the English language works. I can't be the only one who feels this way either after 14 pages.
