I think what surprises me most about the overwhelming positive reception to this album is that this album isn't easy. Not in the pop sense and not even in context with her own work.

She could've easily just further mined the throwback sound that has worked so well for her in the past, or just jumped on the disco train that had some impact earlier this year. All that combined with her pipes and her name alone could've gotten her some solid sales and cemented her position as a modern R&B icon - but she went another route and utterly succeeded.

And all that without promo or warning or singles or anything. I'm still blown away with how well it's selling.

Can you guys imagine every award show performance tho?! (Her strong suit, among other things obviously)?!

But I agree that it's not likely she paid out of pocket considering this deal. Pepsi paid for those videos and she's a boss for that because that wipes out her overhead and aside from whatever goes to the label for distribution, she profits without having to pay back a **** load of advances from the label for studio time, videos and promotional expenses.
