Artist's don't get paid to appear on award shows. That's like TV companies paying to show advertisements.
They don't get paid significantly, but they are paid. The award show gets money from advertisers and sponsors. Some of that money goes to the performers who are there to bring in the ratings.
The 4 era was quite clearly free of payola so Columbia's only costs would be distribution and marketing. 3 million sold covers that.
