People had the song and it was likely going to leak soon. Snippets were being passed around like crazy. Why take a chance and wait for the song to leak when you can just release it early.

This is actually a good thing. It'll only affect her peak positions in Europe but she wasn't going to debut at #1 anywhere.

Once the hype is gone and the video effect wears off, Katy will begin the slaughter.

I'm actually not worried now that I've heard Applause. Katy may lose the #1 for a couple of days, but she is definitely going to regain it sooner rather than later.
