Yes, she said she liked them and has always been "interested in symbolism" or something of a similar nature.
I think she knew what she was doing and wanted the controversy. Fair play to her; something like half of the discussion she's generated this time around has been because of the occult imagery she's showcased. Bad publicity is still publicity.

honestly, partly. i know it sounds like a bad excuse but it did hurt the era to an extent, along with poor/lacking promo, poor management, lack of hype, messy release dates etc..
