I think they were saying that cultural differences is the reason why its okay for a black person to say it and not someone like Ms. Deen, not that its okay for her to be racially insensitive and ignorant.

I understood what evo was saying, but the reason why whites using the n-word to describe blacks is problematic isn't because of mere "cultural differences." It's deeper than that. It's offensive when whites use it because of the history of black/white race relations and power dynamics in the US. A black person calling another black person the n-word doesn't systemically oppress that black person. On the other hand, a wealthy white woman (Paula Deen) using that word to describe hired black help . . . well
A black person is unlikely to attend failing schools, be denied jobs, business loans/mortgages, go to jail, etc. because another black person called him an n-word. Historically and even now, white people, as a group, have had and do have the power to do all those things if they think you're an n-word.
