Alternative
Given that there are 14 debuts this month plus a re-entry from the dynamic Canadian duo of Tegan & Sara (who are riding Katy Perry fueled re-interest in their catchy track), it's safe to say that the Alternative format is alive and well with exciting new music. This of course includes the high profile returns from Phoenix, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Fall Out Boy who are definitely not disappointing out of the gate. Then there is exceptional buzz around tracks from C2C (which sounds like Fatboy Slim meets Jamiroquai meets the Blues), The 1975 (gritty British love song), The Mowgli's (holy upbeat Batman), Royal Teeth (FIFA music), and the strong second single from Atlas Genius. And last but not least - songs that have already entrenched themselves in the top 20 at the format - Capitol Cities, The Neighborhood, just to name a few.
So why then, does the top 10 at the format look so familiar? Current #1 Imagine Dragons has been on the chart for nearly 30 weeks, "Mountain Sound" is in it's 27th week at #2 with a strong bullet, Black Keys are in their 35th week, and Lumineers just left the top 10 with "Ho Hey" in it's 44th week. Did "Ho Hey" slow the inevitable progression of "Stubborn Love"? Throw in Mumford & Sons, Atlas Genius, and the Pickups - and the top 10 has prevented songs from Metric, Capitol Cities, and the like from hitting the top 10.
This resiliency and catching bands off-cycle has also led to some strain for the radio festival circuit this spring/summer. While its great that bands like Lumineers and OMAM have caught serious momentum, there's no way to land them on an American radio Festival lineup. Where does all this come from you ask? An exceptional article from Hits Daily Double that I suggest everyone reads.

CHR
The PR momentum is sky high for JT right now. Legends of the Summer tour, check. (I'm going!). SNL, check. Fallon weeklong residency, check. Awesome second single, "Mirrors", check. "Suit and Tie" getting a second life at radio thanks to awesome Grammy's stunt, check. Speaking of Grammy's - how awesome were they??? And that shows in #2-4. Rihanna's "Stay" zooms up to #2 - securing her upteenth top 5 hit on the chart. Miguel finds a new life with "Adorn", and his second single "Do You" is making strides as well. I finally listened to his album as well - it's solid. And then Bruno Mars - who had the performance of the night I'd say - is about to hit #1 on Billboard and his summer tour is selling like hot cakes. Well deserved.
Big time dance hit for Krewella - "Alive" is instant. Nice follow up for Phillip Phillips after the perennial "Home". Drake shows up on a couple of fronts, as his Biebs collaboration starts streeting at Rhythmic, and his own hype single shows up at #10. "Started from The Bottom" is solid, but has a really unfortunate music video with unnecessary Shoppers Drug Mart stints. Emeli Sande has re-entered the chart with the enduring "Next To Me" several times, and now with the US release of her album and a re-servicing of her track with an appropriately timed Kendrick Lamar remix, she's back with her highest peak yet. And the album is still #1 in the UK! Lastly, Avicci is back on the chart. After scoring a huge international hit with "Levels", his latest already hit #1 in the UK - let's see what it does on this side of the pond.
1. Justin Timberlake f. Jay Z - Suit & Tie (1)
2. Rihanna f. Mikky Ekko - Stay (15)
3. Miguel - Adorn Remix (w/ Wiz Khalifa) / Do You (12)

5. Krewella - Alive (-)
6. Phillip Phillips - Gone Gone Gone (-)
7. Justin Bieber f. Drake - Right Here (-)
8. Emeli Sande f. Kendrick Lamar - Next To Me (RE)
9. Avicci f. Nicki Romero - I Could Be The One (-)
10. Drake - Started From The Bottom (-)
