Since people are honoring Baby one more time for its 14 year anniversary I thought I'd share how her shifts personally and professionally have mirrored major milestones in my life
Well, I'm old as...I just turned 14 going into high school. Before Britney, I was into rock and hip hop. I couldn't stand BSB or Spice girls because they were so popular. Britney made me look at pop outside of the super 6 (MJ, JJ, Madonna, Mariah, Prince, Whitney)
IT was a great time to be in high school during the teen pop era. Its weird how things change.
Enter high school during baby one more time...didn't know who she was but new she was a force. I tried to supress my love for her and down play it even with sometimes (pretending to be a casual fan) when her Making the video for Crazy came on I was a huge stan afterwards.
Graduate high school after her breakup with JT and during her short break transitioning in between teen pop and young adult pop star. Entered college without Britney just seeing her partying and being used to sell others records. I mean people used her in videos, talked about her in magazines, were the anti-britney...the sign of a legend. Sophomore year my life changed with In the zone, the kiss all happening. Junior Year...I had to deal with Chaotic and those marriages. Graduated college and she had been on her second kid (I'll never forget looking at that Matt lauer interview in my studio apt...at the time.)
So many shifts musically and personally with Britney but I always remained a stan (minus the two weeks before her head shaving when she was partying with Paris and looking a mess swinging on the swings randomly in the day time looking dazed and confused...I checked out).
Out in the workforce...dealt with her breakdown, comeback and continued dominance.
I've weathered the storm and will not abandon the greatness that is Britney Spears.
In 2011, Spears returned with the studio album Femme Fatale, featuring the single "Hold It Against Me," which became her fourth single to top the Billboard Hot 100. The second single, the Ke$ha co-written "Till the World Ends," didn't top the charts but it was a bigger hit, going double platinum in the US.
I got that boom boom is hot...again a song that could only fit that college girl experimental phase that britney was in during the itz era.
Outrageous was a contractual obligation as R.Kelly was her labelmate and he was promised the first single.
How her label wanted to go was
1) outrageous
2) everytime (a la cry me a river)
3) I got that boom boom
4) ...doesn't matter since they were willing to look past the flawless toxic song
Britney wanted
1) Me against the music (i hated it at the time but I appreciate the risk of going dance during a time when hip hop was dominant. She was really unhappy that they wanted to force her to do Outrageous as the first single and after the Madonna kiss she thought it would be great to capitalize on the publicity by featuring Madonna also giving her another reason to ditch Outrageous...they agreed and got a #1 ww hit. Tanked in the us barely top 40 although the dance single was #1 for 13 weeks on the singles chart.
2) Toxic...once MATM tanked in the US. they began pushing both I got that boom boom and outrageous. I remember they both received like 100 spins are so. This was during a time where she pretty much had no hit on the US radio (October/early November)...luckily back then she didn't need it. SHe demanded that Toxic be released or she wasn't doing any more press. They caved. She got another #1 WW hit, #1 pop hit a game changing, grammy winning single that is classic, timeless and ahead of its time.
3) Everytime...britney agreed to have this released because she wanted it released but wanted I got that boom boom (even the Ying yang twins confirmed that on one of those Bet countdown shows)...she was okay with it as long as she got to give it a little spin with the video...#1 WW hit and her biggest ballad on radio to date
4) Outrageous...ONLY BECAUSE R.Kelly whined and complained about her being disrespectful for not following through with outflopeous as the first single. Ying yang was pissed because they were ok with IGTBB being released later as it would have still worked in the summer June 2004 release but R.kelly had more power.
5) She wanted Breathe on me and I believe (not sure her label wanted it to) at the beginning of the era but her life changed... I won't say anymore so then she went into pre-rebellion phase and made My prerogative/Do something etc.
