Well this reasoning is rather... interesting... considering the abundance of posts like that and how that's long-been considered an acceptable form of online communication. People post/respond with just smilies on other forums, on FB, even texting with friends. I don't really see how "pointless" would apply to this since the point of any post is to express some thought or sentiment and a smilie is perfectly capable of conveying that.
Same goes for .gif only posts. Yes, I understand why this would get annoying if that is all a certain member posts, but by and large I'd venture that is rarely, if ever, the case. Nevermind how inconsistently the rule seems to be applied. If "pointless" posts are any wherein there's a lack of substantive contribution to the topic at hand then I could round up a whole lot more for you that are filled with text.
