This is a good reason why. In the past people bought albums without knowing what to expect. If they didn't like it, they just had to deal. Now we can listen to leaks and uploaded albums and decide if we want to get them. This market is very tricky though.
It's neither 2x or 3x. But it's closer to two. The albums market at its peak was around 700 million albums sold in the US each year and now it's at roughly 300-330 million so it'd be like 2.2x or 2.3x.
It sold over 60 million. Maybe it would have triple the sales as well.
But really, even if my estimate is off, album sales are still so low compared to the past. We compare album sales a lot. If an artist barely sells 1 Million copies, should they really be compared to another who has sold 30 million 10 or 20 years earlier?

And no, they shouldn't. However, Adele proves that an artist can still sell albums.
Adele wouldn't have sold 75 million like someone said. Her album will soon go diamond in the US and if you think about it not that many albums have done it before 21 (I think it's 14 albums in the Soundscan era). Adele only enjoyed 2000-like success because people were willing to buy her album unlike all of our faves that have to struggle to sell like they wouldn't have had to in the old days.
What else from the "21" era is a first in the music industry besides album sales & weeks at #1 on BB200?

3 mil is a stretch.
21 would be at 30m in US alone and at 69m WW which would put it at '#1 selling album of all time on Mediatraffic.
