1) BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD
1992-1997. 2011-present
"Beavis and butthead" is an animated series that centers on two socially, awkward rock/metal loving teenage boys obssesed with sex, Despite mixed critical reviews the show became a huge success for MTV and quickly reached iconic status and cult-following, its big success led the producers to release a theatrical film "Beavis and butt-head do America" in 1996 grossing impressively $123M on the box office. It was cancelled in 1997 after 5 successful seasons, the pop culture show was recently revived in 2011 for a new season with strong ratings.
2. AEON FLUX
1991-1993 (shorts), 1995
"Aeon flux" is an Avant-garde, science fiction Animated tv series, set in a bizarre, dystopian, future world, Aeon Flux is a tall, leather-clad secret agent. the controversial series involve graphic violence, dark humor, sexuality (fetishism and domination), Originally "Aeon Flux" was runned as short episodes with no dialogues on the MTV liquid television segment, the shorts were so popular that MTV ordered a one season of half-hour episodes with dialogues, the show only survived for 1 season due to lack of audience, but got critical acclaimed by audiences and critics, and cult following being the subject of future commercials and film adaptations.
3. THE HEAD
1994-1996
"The Head" is an animated TV series about a trade-school student who awakens one morning to find that his cranium has enlarged to mammoth proportions. With a creative plot the show received good critical reception and proved to be successful during its first season of 13 episodes, however the show started to decline in ratings and popularity by its second season being cancelled eventually. Since then the show has received some re-runs.
4. THE MAXX
1995
Based and adaptated on The Maxx comics, the animated tv series features the adventures of the hero called The Maxx in the real world and in an alternative reality. Inmediatly after its release the show was universally critically acclaimed, the ratings of the show suffered and only lasted for one season, however The Maxx became the most critically acclaimed animated show of MTV, and is currently considered by Critics, audiences, experts and proffesionals as one of the Greatest animated tv shows ever made.
5. DARIA
1997-2002
Originally Daria Morgendorffer is one character of the Iconic MTV success "Beavis and Butthead", as the nerd classmate of Beavis and Butthead, MTV created this spin-off TV series, now Daria being the center of the storyline, she is a smart, awkward, cynical, nerd, sarcastic student. The show became MTV's most successful animated sitcom since "Beavis and butthead," successfully running for 5 seasons, a TV made Daria film was produced. The show got solid ratings, and wide reception by audiences.
6. CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH
1998-2002, 2006-2007
"Celebrity deathmatch" is a claymation TV show that depicts celebrities against each other in a wrestling ring, the show proved to be bloody and popular running for 4 seasons, hundreds of celebrities faced each other on the Celebrity deathmatch's ring, the show was cancelled in 2002, but it later received a brief revival from 2006-2007.
7. DOWNTOWN
1999
"Downtown" follows a diverse multiracial cast who live in New York City, and presents their everyday lives through quircky, humorous and imaginative perspectives from the characters, the show struggled and proved to be unpopular, despite the low ratings critics the show was considered brilliant by most critics and experts, in 1999 after only one season it was officially cancelled by MTV, the next year "Downtown" received an Emmy award nomination.
Probably many don't know about this popular culture shows.... but probably some people do.
